A book a day will keep low grades away!
Being a bookworm has many advantages. Do you remember the time how often you got ravenous because you read a book with a flashlight under the blankets after bedtime. But what a wonder world it was. You were the hero, the detective, the three-sprint champion, or a world-famous movie star. You could live in the fantasy world that felt like reality.
This is what we want to give every learner of Bergland, the gift of being able to read. We want to instil a love of reading in every Bergie learner. Reading is the foundation for success, not only at school, but also later in a learner's profession. Reading creates a wonder world where characters become a reality, a world where learners can flee to, a world where they can imagine themselves in. According to a study at Ohio University, 2019, parents send their child to Grade 1 with up to one million more words in their vocabulary if they read a story to their children every day. Reading a nice book is good for your child's brain health. It can even improve their test scores and math scores. A nice book makes you read faster. It's also great for your child's mental health.
As parents and teachers, we have a tremendous responsibility to children to make sure that they read books regularly and read the right books. It can determine a child's life rate and even save a life.
Laerskool Bergland Media Centre
Laerskool Bergland se Mediasentrum is geleë in Waterbokstraat. Die biblioteek skep ‘n huislike en warm atmosfeer waar leerders na hartelus kan boeke lees en uitneem. Hier ontmoet jy vir Juffrou Dina Pretorius (mediasentrumonderwyseres).
How does the media centre work?
- Each class, from Grade 1 to Grade 7, follows a bi-weekly timetable.
- The class/language teachers accompany their learners to the Media Centre.
- Here, books are taken out, listened to a story, doing spelling or comprehension activities, or simply reading for own enjoyment.

- In the Media centre there is a fully equipped Adult Division for parents as well.
- Books may be borrowed for 2 weeks.
- The Media Centre has over 6,020 books, most donated in the Foundation Phase and Adult Division.
- Media leaders follow a schedule to ensure that the books are neatly placed on the shelves again. At the end of the year, they are rewarded with an enjoyable excursion.
